LUGANSK, March 09, 22:06 /ITAR-TASS/. Mikhail Bolotskikh, the governor of Ukraine’s eastern Lugansk region, has stepped down under pressure from protesters who gathered outside his office earlier on Sunday to protest his appointment by the interim authorities in Kiev, the local media reports.

“I am asking you to relieve me of my duties,” Bolotskikh said in a statement published on Sunday.

“I am going to meet the head of the regional council now. That’s all. Thank you,” Bolotskikh said leaving the administration building as the crowd was chanting “Shame!”

Earlier on Sunday, about 3,000 people gathered in front of the building of the Lugansk regional state administration in Lugansk to protest the appointment of Mikhail Bolotskikh as the region’s new governor. The protesters first blocked and then stormed the administration’s building demanding Bolotskikh’s resignation.

The protesters have left the building by now, leaving policemen inside.

Ukraine’s acting President Alexander Turchinov appointed Mikhail Bolotskikh to head the Lugansk regional state administration on March 2.
