CARACAS, June 28. /ITAR-TASS /. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Thursday that Ecuador can count on "support and solidarity" of his country after the refusal from trade preferences granted by the United States. This was reported by Venezuelan TV channel Telesur.
"You can count on us, President Correa, in everything you may need," said Maduro. He congratulated his Ecuadorian counterpart with the decision to reject customs privileges. This eliminates the threat of sanctions from the United States if Correa’s government “humanely treats the American Edward Snowden” by giving him asylum.
Earlier, authorities in Quito have announced the cancellation of U.S. benefits. Minister of Communications of South American countries Fernando Alvarez said at a news conference that the trade regime with the United States has become a “new tool of blackmail,” so Ecuador “unilaterally and irrevocably waives these preferences.”
