BERLIN, August 12 (Itar-Tass) - German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle stood against boycotting the winter Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi, a proposal which is voiced increasingly often by officials and LGBT activists across the world, concerned over Russia’s law banning gay propaganda among minors.
“I consider the discussions on boycotting the winter Olympic Games in Sochi a mistake. This causes more damage to the efforts to protect LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) rights,” the German minister said.
However, he added: “The Russian government should protect homosexual persons’ rights.”
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak previously said rights of LGBT minorities would not be infringed upon in Russia.
